Bali Transportation

Dokar

A dokar is the jiggling, horse-drawn cart found throughout Indonesia. The two-wheeled carts are usually brightly coloured with decorative motifs and bells; the small horses or ponies often have long tassels attached to their bridle. A typical dokar has bench seating on either side, which can comfortably fit three or four persons. However, their owners often try to pack in more than that plus bags of rice!

Taxi

Taxis, they are the kings of the road especially in tourists areas such asLegian or Seminyak. They can in fact stop and turn second-naturedly. If you are on foot, they will occasionally honk at you from behind to let you know they are there just in case you need them. If you do need their service, first you have to check if the driver has freshly resetted the meter. Inform the driver if he is driving too fast. Most of them do speak and understand English. As for the cabs at the airport, most charge a standard rate so you just have to pay up front at the cashier.

Mini Bus

If you pay more attention, you might spot some small shacks along the main road or small alleys. You can find information about tourist sites from here. You can say that this service is part of the tour & travel agency but if you plan on going solo, you can just use transportation they provide, a small mini bus (approximately 12 people). Ask for departure time. Sometimes the price is also negotiable.

Bemo

The budget-friendly bemo is Bali's main public transportation and every town has a bemo or bus station. The capital of Bali, Denpasar is the hub of these unique forms of transport and it's good to know that Gilimanuk, Singaraja, Amlapura and Gianyar have major regional terminals, so you can get from one corner of Bali to another. Full-sized buses and larger minibuses travel along the longer routes from the same stations as the bemos.

It is quite impossible to be exact about fares, and unfortunately all tourists and visitors are regularly overcharged. The thing to do is to observe the amount other passengers paying and do as the Balinese do. But do remember to pay the fare before getting off so as to prevent the bemo driver from driving off with your change. It is normal to be charged extra for a large bag and also for a bemos to depart only when the vehicle is full - even though this can take quite a while.
